Where appropriate Music is woven into our creative curriculum topics, or as a discrete topic where this is not possible.
The children are taught music as a class lesson and in a weekly singing Praise and Worship Assembly for the whole school. The children are encouraged to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control, to develop an understanding of musical composition, to organise and manipulate ideas within musical structures and reproduce sounds from aural memory.
Children will begin to develop an understanding of musical notation and listen to and appreciate a wide range of music drawn from different traditions, composers, musicians and time periods. As well as curriculum music the children take part in numerous performances throughout the year such as Harvest assemblies, Christmas performances and musical productions including sining at Evenely Woods for a Midsummer Concert along with other local schools in our cluster.
In 2019, we took our school choir to Wembley to sing in Voice In A Million (VIAM) This was set up in 2009; as a promoter of school / singing events, with an under-pinning message that raises awareness of the plight of children in care and the importance of Adoption and Fostering, both in the UK and worldwide. VIAM showcases some of the finest young singing talent in schools whilst enabling our children to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of singing together in front of thousands. All the children taking part receive tuition, encouragement and support.
We also take our school choir to a local Care Home for residents with dementia. They love to join in with the singing.
All children in Key Stage 2 have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument in a whole class lesson. We use the services of NMPAT who have taught ukulele and brass instruments. For children with a particular interest or talent, we offer peripatetic music lessons on a range of instruments and we offer extra-curricular activities such as choir.
In September 2019, we were awarded The UK Association for Music Education Music Mark in recognition of a commitment to providing high quality music education in our school.
